Preston takeaway that employed illegal workers forced to shut at night 'to protect the public'
A Preston takeaway accused of employing illegal workers, having violent and aggressive staff, and refusing to co-operate with police has been stripped of its licence to open late at night.
The business's manager, Mohamed Ebrahim, insisted that the weapon used was actually a broom handle and that it was in response to a drunken man trying to jump the counter, while Lancashire Constabulary licensing officer PC Ste Connolly said a review of CCTV footage suggested it was more likely a metal scraper used to clean grills. A staff member was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent when police were called to the incident on December 22.
Bianco's was granted its licence in September 2021 and the PC Connolly told the sub-committee that police had received calls over multiple incidents involving violence and aggression in that time. A long running dispute between Mr Ebrahim and a rival takeaway had played a part in that, as had difficulties involving third party delivery drivers.
In response to issues with delivery drivers from companies such as Uber Eats, Mr Thorpe said the business began employing its own drivers in September and has seen no further incidents involving drivers since then. He also said that Mr Ebrahim voluntarily closed the shop to walk-ins after receiving the court order - which only related to late night hours - and has now hired entirely new staff and is willing to employ security on weekend nights.
