Prince Andrew’s appearance at the memorial for Prince Philip was met with both surprise and speculation.
Though Andrew sat next to the queen, he was out of view on the BBC live broadcast and his image was not included in any of the official palace social media updates. A source close to Andrew told thethat the inclusion was a reflection of the fact that the service was primarily a family event. “As the Queen herself has often said: Sometimes people need to remember I have four children.
Due to her mobility issues, Buckingham Palace declined to confirm that the queen would attend the service until right before the event. Instead of walking down the aisle of Westminster Abbey, she and Andrew were dropped off at a side door and entered the church through the Poet’s Corner, to reduce the distance the queen would have to walk.
“The issue of the duke's role had been aired and batted around late last week. It was accepted, perhaps reluctantly, that he would be accompanying her to the abbey from Windsor by car,” the source said. “It is fair to say there have been raised eyebrows at him being so front and center.” According to theAndrew and the queen left Windsor in a Land Rover and then switched into a royal Bentley limousine at Buckingham Palace.
A family source spoke to the tabloid about the internal response. “It would be a great shame if the service was overshadowed by all of this,” the source said. “There is a strong sense of regret that this has happened.”last week that she has taken to using a wheelchair or mobility scooter in her home at Windsor Castle.
