Yet another sign that Harry is taking advantage of his ability to take more political or confrontational stances now that he is no longer a senior member of the royal family
, an initiative launched by the nonprofit Color of Change meant to pressure Facebook into changing its policies around hate speech. Last week, Harry had a conversation with Color of Change’s president,where he said that he was inspired to think about the issue because of his conversations with young people.
“They’re a generation that’s more aware, due to technology and an ability to travel the world, say, through YouTube,” he said. “For me, in my conversations with young people literally all around the world, the same thing keeps coming up. If there’s a younger generation and they’re all saying the same thing, then from a position of privilege, it’s my job to make that change”
In the conversation, Robinson told Harry that Color of Change, a civil rights organization for online advocacy and lobbying founded after Hurricane Katrina, decided to look into online hate speech and harassment after hearing complaints from activists. “Five years ago, our members were being harassed and targeted. Black Lives Matter activists were being targeted—something called doxxing, where they put personal information out publicly,” he said.
Harry said he thought companies need to take more responsibility for hate speech on their platforms. “These are global platforms. Facebook has 1.4 billion people, it's a continent in itself," he said. "There are no rules, there are no laws. So while they were created to connect people, these platforms, and they are still doing that in some pockets. But this is very much where those platforms are profiting from division.
He also explained why he and Meghan decided to reach out to Color of Change and call CEOs and business leaders as a part of the campaign. “As a couple, we take no responsibility for the decisions of companies,” he said. “Our job was just to inform and have an honest conversation as parents. This is principle over profit, and that’s exactly what every one of them said.
