The second-division team regularly plays to full houses at USD's Torero Stadium, but the specter of an MLS team coming in 2025 made the future untenable
Three months after proclaiming “we’re not going anywhere,” the San Diego Loyal have had a change of heart — and direction.Owner Andrew Vassiliadis announced Thursday morning that the Loyal will cease operations at the conclusion of the season, citing the arrival of a Major League Soccer franchise in 2025. He informed the club’s two dozen employees of his decision on Wednesday.
“ are dedicated to this mission, and we will continue to work tirelessly to achieve it,” Vassiliadis said then. “Our passion for soccer and for our community will never falter. San Diego, we are one with you. Our love for this city runs deep. This is our home, and we are proud to be part of its rich and diverse fabric. The club explored options for staying in the area, including a move to North or South County from Torero Stadium, which is five miles from Snapdragon.
The Loyal were the brainchild of Warren Smith, who built the Sacramento Republic into a USL power and nearly made the transition to MLS. He enlisted U.S. national team legend Landon Donovan, and the two launched the Loyal in March 2020 with a soldout crowd of 6,100 for the inaugural game, a 1-1 tie against Eric Wynalda-coached Las Vegas Lights. They missed the playoffs, but it was how they missed them that garnered national attention.
