Developers previously said the building needed 'significant refurbishment'
Progress is being made on plans to build 80 luxury student apartments by one of Nottingham's busiest roads. Plans were first approved in 2021 for the Mega Close company to provide student accommodation at a vacant building on Mansfield Road.
The company, which already provides hundreds of student bed spaces in Nottingham, has now had scaffolding erected around the building ahead of formal work starting. In its planning application, agents for Mega Close previosl said that the building needed "significant refurbishment." The building, constructed in the early 1960s, has had uses ranging from a Magistrates' Court to offices. It was most recently the home of the Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service, which is now based inside the Loxley House building.
"Although the concrete frame of the building is sound, the building has poor thermal performance and the roof is in need of repair. Fundamentally the building is limited by its ceiling heights, which are relatively low for offices and do not allow for the necessary servicing voids for data infrastructure and modern heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
"The conversion of the building to Grade A office space would be wholly unachievable and even an upgrade to the most basic standards would be costly, with limited demand for such a grade of accommodation, as will be discussed further below.
