A potential council tax rise of 4.99% across Blackburn and Darwen has caused a major dispute

Blackburn with Darwen’s executive board fiance boss councillor Vicky McGurk said the increase, which would amount to an extra £56 a year for Band A terraced house and £84 a year to the cost for a Band D family home from April 1, was what the government expected. However, Conservative group leader councillor John Slater accused her and the ruling Labour administration of misleading the public.

Cllr McGurk said: “Unless the proposals are examined and certified as robust by the finance director it is not a budget. It might as well be written on the back of a fag packet.”
