Family, friends of Elisa Serna, who died in San Diego sheriff's custody in 2019, stage rally outside courthouse hours before preliminary hearing that began Monday
Prosecutors began laying the foundation Monday for the criminal case against two San Diego County jail workers who they allege failed to properly treat a woman suffering from drug withdrawal and other symptoms before she died in sheriff’s custody.
A jail watch commander and sheriff’s investigator were the first two witnesses to testify Monday afternoon. “They refused to help her,” Elisa’s father, Michael Serna, said of Pascua and Von Lintig. “They left her to die.” Despite this information, medical staff did not start her on the jail’s withdrawal protocol until the day before she died — after she experienced severe nausea and multiple seizures.
Instead, prosecutors wrote in the court filing, Von Linitg accused Serna of faking her symptoms and refused to assess the young woman despite being summoned to Serna’s cell multiple times by a nurse. Von Lintig’s shift ended a few hours before Serna died. After the doctor left for the day, Pascua, the nurse, went to Serna’s cell to do a routine check of her vital signs. She initially tried to do the check by having Serna stick her arms through the cell door’s food flap.
