Federal prosecutors on Tuesday urged a judge to sentence former national security advisor Michael Flynn from anywhere from zero to six months in jail for lying to federal agents about his contacts with a Russian diplomat shortly before the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The recommendation came in a court filing, in which prosecutors cited the "serious nature of" Flynn's "offense," and "his apparent failure to accept responsiblity" for his crime.Michael Flynn, former U.S. national security adviser, exits federal court in Washington, D.C., on Monday, June 24, 2019.The recommendation in a court filing was a reversal for prosecutors, who previously had called on the judge in the case to give Flynn a sentence with no jail time.

In their new filing, prosecutors cited the "serious nature of" Flynn's "offense," and "his apparent failure to accept responsiblity" for his crime. The new recommendation comes after months of efforts by Flynn and his defense lawyers to effectively undo his guilty please in the case by arguing that prosecutors had withheld evidence from him, and that the FBI had misled Flynn.His defense lawyer, Sidney Powell, did not immediately return a request for comment.
