“It’s important that people aren’t afraid to get out there,” says Elena Cohen (LegallyFemme), president of the NLGnews. Here, Cohen shares a few simple and practical things can make your experience safer and easier.
announcing that he's calling up "thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel, and law enforcement officers" in the nation's capital and encouraging governors to do the same won’t change the fact that protests in New York City, in Washington—and across the country—against police brutality and to honor the memory of George Floyd and others are gaining momentum, not losing it, as more and more people are making their voice heard and their presence felt.
"Bring an ID. In a lot of places, including New York, police can only give you a ticket—as opposed to taking you into custody—for low-level violations if you have an ID on you. If police can’t confirm who you are, you’ll end up having to go through the system and likely stay in jail overnight. In most cases, it doesn’t even have to be a valid government ID if you don’t have one: Any ID is better than no ID.
"There’s no way to be 100% sure you’re not going be arrested, or falsely arrested. We’ve heard from lots of people in the last few days in New York City who were walking home from work or just walked past a protest to see what was going on and were arrested. And there’s lots of ways to fight those charges down the line—you’re probably not going to end up with a criminal conviction. But obviously there’s a chance you could spend a few hours in police custody.
