OAKLAND — Two people shot with less-than-lethal ammunition by Alameda County sheriff deputies during a 2020 protest over the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd will share $250,000 after settling a lawsuit with Oakland and Alameda County, according to court documents.restricting police and deputies use of the less-than-lethal ammunition at demonstrations and other crowd events.
It alleged that police and deputies displayed some of the same behaviors that gatherers were protesting. An Alameda County sheriff’s deputy shot Sears, 52, in the hip with a “rubber bullet” as he turned to leave when deputies and Oakland police officers began using tear gas to disperse the crowd. A deputy also shot Brown, 22, with a munition after she ran from officers who she said charged her when she washed the eyes of those who had been tear-gassed.
