The 700 employees are represented by SEIU Local 121RN and have been in negotiations with the hospital since June; their contract expired Sept. 30.
Nurses and other workers at
SEIU 121RN Executive Director Rosanna Mendez said the hospital should ensure that caregivers receive breaks and lunches to prevent physical and mental exhaustion from potentially causing medical errors, and they should work on recognizing and retaining experienced staff. In a survey of SEIU 121RN members at Providence, nearly three-quarters said that they would fear retaliation for reporting harassment, the union said.
Providence said it has a regional security and safety team that specializes in disaster preparedness.
