Nearly a year after his older sister's murder, the Aztecs guard is learning to cope with loss: 'I think about her every day'

In the moments before tipoff at Viejas Arena, with the music pumping, with the crowd standing and clapping, Lamont Butler leaves the San Diego State bench and walks toward center court. And glances into the midcourt seating area across from scorer’s table, about four rows up … right there.

When they arrived on campus at the JAM Center practice facility, Butler’s family was waiting for him in a meeting room downstairs.Asasha had been shot and killed at her home in Hemet a few hours before the team left for Utah State. They decided to wait to tell Lamont, not wanting him to hear it over the phone, away from family in another state.

“He’s really the most selfless kid I’ve ever met. I marvel at him. I broke down crying one night and he said, ‘We’re going to be all right, Dad. I got you. We’ll get through this.’” At the next home game, an early afternoon tip six days later against Nevada, a moment of silence was observed for Asasha before tipoff. The Aztecs won 63-53, starting a run of 11 wins in 12 games that secured an NCAA Tournament berth.
