The assessments of Putin's power after the death of Prigozhin are strong on wishful thinking
in late June and has now most likely killed off Prigozhin and senior Wagner leaders by destroying their plane with a bomb or missile. Yet the mutiny never really amounted to a coup or putsch, lasted for little more than a couple of days, and fell apart soon after Putin publicly denounced it on television. Crucially, the regular Russian never showed any sign of joining in, so it was doomed to fail.
Putin’s rule in Russia over the past 23 years has been marked by gangster-type operations inside and outside the country. Most probably, the security and intelligence services were involved, though a thin veil of deniability was retained. Could his time in the Kremlin be now coming to an end? Hope that this might be so is ever present among Western governments, media, think-tanks and retired generals, citing as weaknesses Putin’s paranoid need to punish what he views as treachery.
