Those remarks, his first on the failed coup since he spoke on Saturday vowing to crush the rebellion, sought to draw a line under the extraordinary uprising that some Western leaders saw asAbbas Gallyamov, a former speechwriter for Mr Putin, said this was deliberate, tellingthat the Russian president avoids publicly naming his domestic enemies as “he thinks it would elevate their status to his level if he did”.
Mr Putin did thank Wagner fighters and commanders who had stood down from the mutiny to avoid what he called “fratricidal bloodshed”, and said the vast majority of the group’s members were patriots.
