The pole stands at the centre of the village and is 60 foot tall
Just a short distance from Sherwood Forest you will find the peaceful village which is home to Nottinghamshire's only Maypole. Standing at 60-feet high, Wellow is home to a permanent Maypole which can be traced back more than 160 years.
Each year in May the village comes together for its traditional May Day celebrations, although it has been reported that in previous years these have been taking place at the end of the month on the late Spring Bank Holiday when the weather is better. Owner of The Maypole At Wellow, Graham Lawrence, lived in the "beautiful village" for a number of years.
Graham added: "The police close the road for us and we have big crowds that come and watch." Named after the village's iconic pole, The Maypole At Wellow is a hotel on Newark Road, that used to be a coaching inn. However, Graham rebuilt rooms on the site and named them The Stables to honour the original purpose. Additionally, all of the rooms inside the hotel have been named after a specific May Queen.
