La Jolla High freshman Chiara Dailey, San Diego High sophomore Anita Bowen-Fontenot among top qualifiers in Friday's preliminaries at Buchanan High’s Memorial Stadium
Clearly there are some events where San Diego is right with the best of the state in high school track. Others not so much.
It’s wise to remember that Dailey is only a freshman. One who had never stepped on a track before this season.Dailey looked like an experienced runner with speed when she stayed with some of the best 1,600-meter runners in the state and surged the final 100 meters to win her heat in 4:49.73, the second fastest time of the day behind the 4:49.03 by Palo Alto’s Kinga Czalkowska in the other heat.
For Dailey it was a walk — OK, run — in the park as she cruised after running three events every meet and could focus on just one race. “I lost my balance,” said Riggins who is focusing totally on this event where she was fifth in the state a year ago. “I just wanted to be among the top four to qualify so I didn’t worry about anything else.”“It’ll take something in the low 4:40s to win,” said Riggins, who obviously feels she can run that fast. Should she do so, she’ll break the section record of 4:41.71 by Torrey Pines’ Alli Billmeyer in 2011.Thomas, who ran 4:07.
“I’ll be here ,” she said, relieved. “The problem was we’d jump and then we had to wait more than an hour. We did that twice and it’s difficult to regain your focus. But I made it and I’m really confident.”
