On October 29, 2018, Lion Air Flight 610, a 737 Max 8, crashed into the Java Sea after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia. All 189 people on board were lost to the crash. Both incidents brought up concerns about the aircraft's flight control system, more specifically the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System , which was engineered to address the risk of stalling that could occur in certain flight conditions. Investigations showed that both crashes included issues with the MCAS.
In 2023, the business plans to deliver approximately 375–400 Maxes, just a few less than the estimated 400–450 it was planning on producing before discovering that two distinct fuselages provided by Kansas-based Spirit AeroSystems had quality issues.
