The Labour leader is facing the audience in York ahead of prime minister Rishi Sunak
Sir Keir is asked about his manifesto pledge to remove the tax break on private schools. The questioner is applauded as he asks if Sir Keir believes it will place greater strain on state schools. He says: 'I completely understand that families work hard and save hard to send their children to private school because they're aspirational for their children. 'But all parents are aspirational for their children.
He says that it has been a 'tough decision' to fund the recruitment of new teachers through VAT on private school fees. He is also asked how people are supposed to save for house deposits when they are paying so much in rent, and says: 'Young people who are working hard on a reasonably decent wage but then having to pay a huge part of it on rent We want a low deposit scheme so people who can prove they can pay' can get on the housing ladder.
