Quibi, the subscription-based mobile video service from Jeffrey Katzenberg, is testing free and cheaper versions in Australia and New Zealand as it eyes international expansion
By Sahil Patel Close Sahil Patel Aug. 5, 2020 7:55 pm ET Quibi Holdings LLC is testing a free version in Australia and New Zealand as the fledgling short-form video streaming service seeks to expand internationally and add subscribers, a person familiar with the matter said.
The service has recruited Hollywood talent such as Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, Sophie Turner and Kevin Hart to develop or star in shows for its service. It also counts entertainment giants such as Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal as investors. The U.S. and Canadian version has been available internationally, with the same pricing structure. But Quibi is now testing a free option for Australia and New Zealand that will be supported by ads, as well as a lower price for its ad-free version at 7 Australian dollars a month or about $5 in U.S. currency.
