The Labour Chancellor accused the Tories of a 'cover-up' and spending money the UK Government did not have.
Rachel Reeves has announced the Winter Fuel Payment will no longer be paid to all older people as she tries to plug a £22 billion blackhole in the public finances caused by the Tories.
It is not yet known if older Scots will miss out on payments caused by the changes announced by Reeves today. And she she stood by a pledge not to raise taxes for working people - National Insurance, basic higher or additional rates of income tax and VAT - but said there would be challenging trade-offs before she announced the new Government's first UK Budget on October 30.The Winter Fuel Payment was previously offered to all adults in the UK born before September 25, 1957, offering them between £250 and £600 to help pay heating bills.
She added: "The Government published its plans for day-to-day spending in the spring budget in March. But when I arrived in the Treasury, on the very first day I was alerted by officials that this was not how much the previous government expected to spend this year – it wasn’t even close. "Throughout the election, the SNP repeatedly warned the Labour Party's damaging decision to copy Tory fiscal rules and spending plans would mean around £18billion of cuts or tax rises," he said.
