Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves has promised Scots their heating bills will fall even though the energy price cap is rising.
She announced steep spending cuts, including to the Winter Fuel Payment for older people, and more “pain” is expected in October’s Budget. “And we have to be open and transparent about that. It’s the right thing to do, but also it’s the only way that we can fix the problem. You can only fix the problem if you are open and honest about it.”
“I had to take some difficult decisions. They weren’t decisions I wanted to take. They weren’t decisions that I expected to take, but in the circumstances that I faced they were the right decisions. Asked who is to blame for the Scottish Government cuts, she replied: “The Conservatives were in power in Westminster for fourteen years and the SNP have been in charge for seventeen years up here. And I think Governments have to take responsibility.
“GB Energy will be headquartered here in Scotland, investing in homegrown renewables, to create good jobs here in Britain and also to lower people’s energy bills.”
