Chancellor says all pensioners except those in receipt of pension credit and other benefits will no longer get the £300 payment to help with energy bills - a possible move first reported by i during the election campaign
The Chancellor said the payment to help older people with energy bills – £300 a year – will be scrapped for those not in receipt of pension credit or other means tested benefits as she makes sweeping spending cuts to plug the £20bn black hole inherited from the Conservatives. According to the document, a Labour government would keep the state pension triple lock but there was no mention of maintaining the existing state-funded benefits, including the payment of up to £300 to help the over-65s with fuel bills in winter.
The fact that Labour refused to rule out means testing pensioner benefits could fuel Tory criticism that Ms Reeves was planning the move all along.
