Raheem Sterling deciding to join CFC, where he was racially abused in 2018, is typical of his determination & drive. He's making a decision he thinks is best for his career. It is not for others to question his choice on that basis. ✍️ MayowaQuadri_

buying houses for family members. “The young black kid is looked at in a bad light,” Sterling wrote. “Which helps fuel racism and aggressive behaviour.” This was accompanied by screengrabs of two newspaper articles in which Adarabioyo was criticised for buying a house despite his tender age and lack of first-team minutes, while Foden was praised for much the same thing. In one action, Raheem single-handedly exposed a truth he and many other black footballers had been aware of for all too long.

One newspaper accused him of ‘shooting himself in the foot’ by getting a tattoo of a gun on his right leg, which was in fact a tribute to his father who was shot dead when Sterling was just two years old. Far from attempting to glamourise gun crime, the tattoo was an act of defiance, a vow to never become involved in such a lifestyle.

When things are good, you are accepted. When they are bad, you become the point of discussion. The treatment of you and of your white counterparts is never the same. No matter what you do, somehow it is not good enough. Despite all of this, Sterling’s response is always to perform on a football pitch and keep hitting new highs.

There is an example to be seen in speaking out on treatment and inequality like Rashford continues to because Sterling has shown that change can come from using your platform and addressing wrongdoings. While Sterling could become the King of Stamford Bridge, that fan will never enter the stadium again. It is Raheem’s house now.

What Chelsea did in the aftermath was make it clear behaviour of that nature would not be tolerated. It is not on Sterling or other black athletes to keep reliving and enduring the negativity they suffer. It’s on football and the wider society to not just protect players and fans, but also ensure that it never happens again. On the sad occasion that it does, those individuals and groups should be dealt with accordingly.
