Dwayne Brooks, who spent 35 years in prison for a murder conviction that was overturned earlier this year, raises a fist to the prisoners in the Cuyahoga County Jail during a rally to mark International Wrongful Conviction Day on Monday, Oct. 2.
Kenney’s involvement is personal. Her husband, Peter Kenney Jr., is serving a life sentence for a murder that he has maintained he didn’t commit. He is awaiting a hearing on his motion for a new trial.The rally has grown each year as more convictions are overturned. Greig and CSU law professor Jonathan Witmer-Rich said the clinic, which will be up and running in January, is the first wrongful conviction clinic in Cleveland. The Ohio Innocence Project is based in Cincinnati and the Ohio public defender’s wrongful conviction unit is based in Columbus.The rally also featured political calls to action.
