McVay and LaFleur, friends and old coaching colleagues, have supported each other during an unusual losing season for both. Mayfield’s second Rams game is against Aaron Rodgers.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Rams coach Sean McVay was confident Packers coach Matt LaFleur was one of the several people who texted him after quarterback Baker Mayfield orchestrated a remarkable game-winning drive against the Las Vegas Raiders in his Rams debut.
LaFleur, who was McVay’s offensive coordinator with the Rams in 2017, has won three consecutive NFC North titles since becoming the Packers’ head coach. But the Packers are 5-8 this season and there’s uncertainty about star quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team. “We’ve had a lot of good conversations,” LaFleur told Rams reporters on Friday. “Being in, I would say, a similar situation … I’ve learned so much from him, just watching him in times of adversity, although we didn’t have a ton that first year , but still, every week is a new week, and there’s ups and downs even when you’re winning, so to see how just steady he was has taught me a lot.
For 12 games, McVay and his coaching staff struggled with getting the offense in sync and playing complementary football with the defense and special teams. Then, suddenly, it quickly came together for Mayfield’s 48-hour gauntlet with the Rams .
