There is a month left in the season and there is a three-way tie for the AL West between Texas, Seattle and Houston.
So, let’s try to sort through this based on where the teams are now. Short answer: The Rangers are currently your technical division leaders and holders of the No. 2 seed in the AL. Here’s how we got there:The idea of the more complex tiebreakers is to eliminate teams to simmer things down to two teams. The first two-team tiebreaker is head-to-head record. The Rangers have an edge on Seattle there, having won five of the first six. They face an uphill battle, however, against Houston.
In the event the three teams all end up with identical records against one other - and I’m not sure that can happen mathematically at this moment - then the next tiebreaker would be overall record against the AL West. This is the nightmare scenario for the Rangers. Seattle currently is 23-12 against the division and Houston 26-17. The Rangers are just 21-15. They’d finish with the third seed among those teams.
The Rangers are 2-1 against Toronto this year with four games remaining in Toronto in two weeks. The Rangers would need to split that series to assure themselves of the tiebreaker in any scenario that pits them against the Blue Jays.
