SURPRISE, Ariz. – Corey Seager’s first time up Saturday, Jonathan India, the Reds’ second baseman, stood in anticipation a few feet right of standard...

Especially if you’re Seager, the national poster boy for life after the ban on shifts. One excuse for his career lows almost across the board last year was that no hitter saw more shifts. By at least one estimate, anyway, they might have cost him 20 hits in his Rangers debut.

Until Friday’s game in Mesa, when Seager also singled twice, the Rangers figured their $32.5 million shortstop was the beneficiary of only a solitary single that would have been swallowed up in the shift. You could argue that both of his hits against Oakland might have been shift casualties last year. Maybe both singles Saturday, too.Never ask any hitter, even a former hitter, if anything wasn’t a legit hit no matter what the circumstances..

Last year, according to Statcast analysis, Seager was shifted 93% of the time, tops in baseball. He pulled 107 ground balls into that shift, also first in baseball. Of those grounders, only six counted as base hits. For a better visual of what the shift cost him, consider a Seager at bat on Sept. 25 last year against Cleveland. He ripped a liner clocked at 108 mph off the bat, only to watch it die in the glove of a leaping Tyler Freeman, the Guardians’ second baseman, who was standing 174 feet from home plate at the time. Out where softball outfielders roam., Mike Petriello established an intriguing case that Seager has actually hit the ball harder against the shift.
