Groundhog Day works perfectly as a comedy-drama, but Re/Member proves that the Bill Murray movie would have been no less great as a horror movie.
Re/Member's dark and violent spin on a well-known time travel trope proves that Groundhog Day could have worked well as a horror movie. Adapted from a manga titled Re/member – Karada Sagashi, Netflix's Re/Member uses a high school as a setting to unravel a gripping survival drama.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While unfolding its murder mystery drama with a paranormal time travel twist, Netflix's Re/Member also explores coming-of-age themes surrounding loneliness and the human memory's ambiguousness. Owing to these themes and its vast roster of well-written characters, Re/Member manages to stand out in the time travel sub-genre. However, despite all of these distinct elements, Re/Member, at its core, seems reminiscent of a classic fantasy comedy movie.
While Phil's Groundhog Day time loop ends when he redeems his romance with Andie MacDowell's Rita and finds a purpose to stay in Punxsutawney, the high schoolers' spiraling narrative in Re/Member takes a grim turn when they realize that they must assemble the missing parts of a dead girl's body before a vicious monster wipes them out of existence.
Why Re/Member's Time Loop Concept Works So Well For Horror From Source Code and Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow's sci-fi action to Palm Springs and Groundhog Day's comical feel-good drama, many movie genres have previously adopted the time loop concept. By harping on the idea of how repeatedly reliving the same nightmare of a day can be terrifying, Re/Member affirms that that time loop concept works well for horror as well.
For instance, the idea of living life on repeat alludes to purgatory and seems in tandem with the ancient myths of the fire of Prometheus and the punishment of Sisyphus. As Prometheus and Sisyphus sustained eternal punishments for their "sins," Phil in Groundhog Day's time loop seems to be redeeming himself from his past blunders.
