Obituary: A geography major at Stanford found a fortune in the university’s backyard with prescient bets on real estate

John Arrillaga Sr., a geography major who graduated from Stanford University in 1960, spotted a spectacular opportunity nearby—in the farmlands surrounding his alma mater. With a partner, Richard Peery, he began buying land and developing office buildings in the 1960s in an area south of San Francisco that became known as Silicon Valley.

Their firm, Peery Arrillaga, eventually built commercial real estate totaling more than 20 million square feet as the valley boomed. Forbes magazine last year estimated Mr. Arrillaga’s net worth at $2.5 billion.
