Mickey Harte’s side claimed a hard-fought four-point win thanks to goals from Conor McCluskey and Emmett Bradley
Derry booked their place in Monday morning’s preliminary quarter-final draw after a nervy and hard-fought four-point win over Westmeath in Newry’s Páirc Esler last night.
Indeed, they were indebted to goalkeeper Odhran Lynch for making a smart save to dey James Dolan early on after a delightful through ball from Jamie Gonoud. Lachlan Murray and Eunan Mulholland clipped over good scores from play, but it was Westmeath who led 0-5 to 0-4 when midfielder Ray Connellan landed a fine point from play after 32 minutes.
Diarmuid Baker broke the tackle and played Donncha Gilmore in on goal. Conor McCluskey appeared off his right shoulder, took the pass and buried the ball low into Jason Daly’s net. In a crucial two-point swing, Conor Glass rose highest above the Derry crossbar to save a Ronan Wallace 45 before scoring a great point from play at the other end in the same passage of play.
Diarmuid Baker was again a man to break the line and he set up Emmett Bradley for an empathic finish.
