Christmas tree recycling project at Island Beach State Park is designed to shore up the natural dune system.
Even after the holiday season has come and gone, some recycled New Jersey Christmas trees have found a new way to delight, helping the environment at the Jersey Shore.
Saturday, January 8, 2022 -At Island Beach State Park, volunteers Kelly Scott. left and Taylor Melillo load donated Christmas trees onto a truck for delivery to the beach where they will be used to aid in the improvement and health of the dune system. - _Island Beach State Park Superintendent Jenifer Clayton ran the operation in the parking lot drop-off point, assisted by staff naturalists and volunteers, bundled up against the winter temperatures and steady wind. The event ran from 9 a.m.
The workers were enthusiastic despite sometimes-extended waits in the cold for the next drop-offs, due to the limited scope this year. Collected trees were then thrown into “Beach Buggies” which were either IBSP trucks, or privately-owned pick-up trucks brought by volunteers.spokesperson Kelly Scott said the last such Christmas tree collection was in January 2020. They did not have one in 2021 because of COVID. Prior to 2020, their last tree collection was after superstorm Sandy.
