Reddit users keep up blackout protest after CEO's ‘trivializing’ memo

Major subreddits are still dark as Reddit users continue to protest CEO Steve Huffman's proposed data pricing changes after a widespread blackout and his “trivializing” memo in response.

For the thousands of subreddits that turned off posting or went fully private in protest of the pricing changes, a new phase of resistance has begun. Moderators of three subreddits with over 25 million members — r/aww, r/videos and r/music — have kept their forums closed, holding out for more movement from Reddit’s executives.

And more than 300 other subreddits are still private, according to a post pinned in the r/ModCoord channel, one of the sites of frenetic organizing activity for moderators last week. The post also encouraged moderators across the platform to poll their users and gauge interest before joining the indefinite shutdowns.

But the vast majority of the protesting subreddits appear to have at least partially opened back up as moderators try to balance advocating against the company’s changes with maintaining their users’ access and spirit. The moderators of r/Blind reopened their subreddit but announced that they would attach a comment to each post reminding Reddit of the community's concerns — blind users and moderators have often relied on third-party apps to better use the platform.
