“This latest data shows just how much the public want sexual violence to be prioritised by our justice agencies. But the reality is lightyears away from this, with rape survivors finding that when they do report to the police, just 1.3% have charges brought against a perpetrator,” she said. Her tragic death, which prompted calls for the “toxic culture” in the Met to be institutionally reformed, also saw campaigners lead the charge to have Valerie’s Law implemented to protect black women and girls.
“We’ve seen that the IOPC found that there were mistakes made with the cases of Bibba Henry and Nicole Smallman, seven years ago it was Valerie Forde and her baby daughter. Nothing has changed.” The IPSO poll results also showed that only three in ten people believe the police are effective at preventing violence against women and less than half believe they take it seriously.
“We are clear that we can’t end violence against women without tackling the inequality that drives it. This means working to address the racism and sexism that is embedded in every sphere of society – from our justice system to our cultural institutions.”
