Leader Richard Tice vowed to make the looming battle 'the immigration election' as he played down the impact of the Brexit champion's decision.

Nigel Farage is shelving his GB News show to campaign for Reform - but will not be a candidate at the election.

He also ridiculed Mr Sunak for his rain-sodden election announcement yesterday, jibing that he had been 'drowned out' by 'Remoaner in chief' protester Steve Bray playing the 1997 New Labour anthem Things Can Only Get Better. Ministers argue that reforms tightening rules on dependents and students have only just taken effect.

Rumours are swirling about a Nigel Farage comeback today as Reform prepares to launch its election push But he only said he would 'think about' his own plans overnight, suggesting Mr Sunak's decision to go early had 'quite a lot to do with me' - so he did not have time to gain momentum in a campaign. The Office for National Statistics also revised up the previous year to 764,000 - increasing the already eye-watering record high.

Some 1.22million people are estimated to have arrived in the UK in 2023 , while 532,000 are likely to have left . This is compared with 1.26 million and 493,000 respectively in 2022. Home Secretary James Cleverly said: 'The latest migration statistics show a 10 per cent fall in net migration last year, with visa applications down 25 per cent so far in 2024.

'I will do my bit to help in the campaign, but it is not the right time for me to go any further than that. The party has been registering above 10 per cent in polls, potentially enough to doom significant number of Conservative MPs - although experts believe they will not be able to win any seats. Speaking to GB News, where is a presenter, Mr Farage said: 'I think the timing of this general election has quite a lot to do with me.

The campaign got off to a less than auspicious start last night as Mr Sunak announced the summer election in a dramatic - and soaking wet - Downing Street statement. 'The question now is how and who do you trust to turn that foundation into a secure future... now is the moment for Britain to decide its future,' he said.

Dame Andrea Jenkyns, who has called for Mr Sunak to go, said she understood 'other letters have been going in' to 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady but 'colleagues, it's too late, I told you six months ago we should have done this'.
