A Regina couple says the voice on the other end of the phone begging for help sounded so much like their grandson they ignored the red flags.
“He started telling me about this accident he’d been in with his friend Daniel,” Ruth Card, explained during an interview Tuesday morning. “Well, it turns out that he doesn’t even have a friend called Daniel.”
Card’s “grandson” connected her with someone identified as “Brian Miller,” who works for a firm called Miller Thompson. The firm actually does exist and has offices in Regina, but doesn’t list anyone by that name working for them. There were other red flags and questions: Being advised not to tell anyone about this; why did insurance know so quickly what the damage was worth; hesitation from the lawyer when asked what firm he worked for; and why did their grandson end up with such a serious charge against him.
And while it was the first time they’d heard about such a sophisticated scam, it’s not the first time it’s happened.
