The Chicago Fire Department pulled the Des Plaines boy from the water in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue, just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to police. The unidentified female relative initially told police that the boy was “acting up” and that she “let his shirt go,” according to a police report obtained by the Tribune. Police located surveillance video that showed the boy crawling on his hands and knees looking over the edge of the pier. The relative was holding on to the boy’s shirt and then appeared to push him into the water. The woman was being questioned, but had not been charged, authorities said.
A spokesman with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said the agency had no prior contact with the boy’s family, but were investigating the circumstances of his injury.
