Karayanis, the company’s general director from 1977 to 2000, has died at age 93.

Karayanis brought experience as a professional singer, stage director and administrator. He studied voice at Carnegie-Mellon University in his native Pittsburgh and opera at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. During six years in Europe, he studied opera administration and production at the Hamburg State Opera, while singing various baritone roles and stage directing.
In early years, the Dallas Opera gained the nickname “La Scala West,” casting stars including Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland and Plácido Domingo. Director/designer Franco Zeffirelli and costumer Peter Hall supplied dramatic visuals. “Plato was very supportive, very helpful, and he was very good at managing the people that worked with him, and keeping them performing at their highest level.” But Karayanis and Rescigno ultimately locked horns, and the 74-year-old conductor resigned in 1990.
