Dave McKenna, the founder of suicide prevention charity Kickin’ On, says he works every day in the hope that this figure will one day fall to zero.
The number of people dying by suicide in Renfrewshire remains stubbornly high as Buddies continue to struggle with mental health problems.
Powered by the Paisley Daily Express, Renfrewshire Live is your go-to source for news, features and sport with live coverage provided direct to the app, seven days a week. “I’ve never had a head for figures or graphs or charts, all I know is that it is 34 sons, brothers, dads, friends who are no longer with us, and the most difficult part of reading that is that all of those deaths are preventable.
Dave formed Kickin’ On in 2020 after losing a close friend to suicide. His charity started using football as a means to bring men together to talk about their mental health struggles and addiction. It has since flourished into a lifeline charity for all genders and people of all ages. “Suicide is a complex and challenging issue and the challenges remain to prevent suicides within Renfrewshire.
“As well as the more familiar work we do with the emergency services, NHS and the third sector, our approach also aims to develop a wider community responsibility, through training opportunities being available for anyone who lives or works within Renfrewshire.”
