U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales was the lone Texas Republican to support a bill offering federal protections for same-sex marriages, siding with Democrats over most of his GOP colleagues on major legislation for the second time in the last month.
Republicans who opposed the bill argued it was a “question of whether the federal government should tell Texas what marriages they have to recognize, irrespective of what the courts have said.”Gonzales last month was one of just 14 Republicans to vote for a bipartisan gun bill that was drafted in response to mass shootings, including in Uvalde, which is in his district.
“As a congressman it’s my duty to pass laws that never infringe on the Constitution while protecting the lives of the innocent,” Gonzales tweeted at the time.
