More than 250 people showed up to a City Council meeting in June, sharing pleas for and against an ordinance that would ban homeless camping on public property. Last week, the council finalized the controversial ban in another split vote.

I don’t typically cover the San Diego City Council, but when asked to attend a recentI knew how many people would show up to share their stories.

I reluctantly sat on the hard ground for five hours. Even though there were only two items on the agenda, the council meeting lasted nearly 11 hours that night. Public comment for the homeless camping ban lasted over four hours — and that was after the public had already waited nearly four and a half for the item to come up for discussion.As it grew later, the chambers began to empty. But I remained on the floor.
