Chants of “Mayor, mayor, mayor,” filled the crowded Mexico Lindo restaurant in Portage as Republican Austin Bonta stepped down from the stage.

“I am so honored to have the opportunity to serve the people of Portage for the next four years,” said Bonta, glowing from Tuesday night’s election returns. Preliminary vote totals Tuesday night showed Bonta had 58.75% of the votes. He thanked incumbent Mayor Sue Lynch, a Democrat, for running a positive and issues-based campaign. Green Party candidate Michael Cooper also ran in the three-way race. Lynch had hoped to serve a second term. She was nervous when vote totals began to show up.

Lynch lost to republican candidate Austin Bonta. Bonta said at a mayoral debate that he has heard stories of businesses giving up on Portage because of the red tape they face at City Hall. He wants to make it easier to do business in the city. Another issue facing the city is what to do about collecting recyclables. The city collects recyclables, but it’s on probation by the waste company accepting trash and recyclables because too much trash is contaminating the stream of recyclables.
