The different responses underscore the ever-growing gap between Trump’s foreign policy perspective and the views of most members of his own party. Senate Republicans have voiced alarm at the violent protests in China. Over the summer, McConnell wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal warning Beijing would face consequences “if Hong Kong’s autonomy is eroded.”
