They found methane emissions from the gathering lines are at least 213,000 metric tons per year – an emissions factor of 2.7 metric tons per year per kilometer of pipeline, which is 14 times more than estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to the EDF. That much methane has a similar impact on the climate each year as 3.7 million cars, researchers said.U.S.
