“From the day I moved in I have never opened my shutters over fear of what is going on in the park.'
Botanic residents are coming up against businesses and an arts centre over a request to close Crescent Park at night.
“Such activity includes, groups of aggressive and loud individuals inhabiting the park, drug dealing, alcohol and drug misuse, knife crime, littering and urination in shrubbery.” “I don’t even feel safe walking through the park at night, so I will go round the long way up by the university. There will be people sitting at my door drinking when I arrive, shouting at other people drinking across the park. There is not a month goes by without a police card coming through my door asking me for CCTV from shenanigans the night before.”
A representative from Crescent Arts Centre said if the park was closed in the dark hours, it would mean the centre would have to completely change its fire evacuation regimen, with staff and patrons having to collect across University Road opposite the building. SDLP Councillor for Botanic Gary McKeown said: “The setting is brilliant and the location couldn’t be better, but it’s no secret that it has had its challenges. I know that residents, businesses and organisations in the area have made a real effort to improve it, so we need to build on that and see how we can take it to the next level and support what they have been trying to do.
