Residents in the Queensgate area of Burnley have defended their community against claims of being a 'no-go zone' due to antisocial behaviour. Despite complaints made at a council meeting, residents describe the area as safe and pleasant.
Residents in a Burnley neighbourhood branded a 'no-go zone' have defended their community following calls to tackle antisocial behaviour.
In fact, we were met by a community of people who described the area as "perfectly nice, perfectly safe." As traffic flowed along the busy Colne Road, shops and businesses were open and groups of men made their way to Friday prayers at the Queensgate Islamic Centre. Waqas Ali has a shop in the area. He said: "I have been here for seven years. It is a respectful area. I know a lot of people here - it's perfectly nice, perfectly safe."
Cllr Anwar said: “We’ve listened to the concerns and issues raised by residents and immediately liaised with colleagues at Lancashire Police to organise this combined, partnership approach to see what can be done to address them. “We are working closely with Burnley Council and other partners to tackle and prevent anti-social behaviour.”
