Coach Buzz Williams realizes Aggies need to beef up inside to compete in SEC, NCAA...
TAMPA, FLORIDA - MARCH 13: ead coach Buzz Williams of the Texas A&M Aggies talks with a referee during the second half against the Tennessee Volunteers in the Championship game of the SEC Men's Tournament at Amalie Arena on March 13, 2022 in Tampa, Florida. COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M learned a valuable lesson this season: Don’t lose eight straight games in the middle of league play if you want to make the NCAA Tournament.
“It’s something I’ll probably remember for a long time, probably until I pass away, because I’ve never been through or seen anything happen like this in my life,” A&M senior guard Quenton Jackson said. Coleman of course would like to think of the eight straight losses as a “little slump,” but unfortunately for the Aggies, it became a talking point of the NCAA’s selection committee when trying to peg the last few at-large entrants of the 68 total.
“You can almost say in all of those games in March we were just fighting in hopes that we could have one more game,” Williams said. “… We did that 10 times prior to tonight.” “Colby looked at me and said he was going to throw me the ball, and I was fortunate enough to knock down the shot,” Nunge said.
Finishing in the top two of the NIT doesn’t guarantee NCAA success the next season, either. Fellow SEC member Mississippi State finished second to Memphis last year in the NIT, and the Bulldogs failed to earn an NCAA berth this season.
