Re 'Fixing San Diego’s coastal rail system will cost billions. Has the time come to retire it?' : The commentary by a public health professor and a Maryland economist who now live in Del Mar, suggesting to 'retire' the state-supported Pacific Surfliner rail service between San Clemente and San Diego represents a step in the wrong direction. Los Angeles-San Diego is the second busiest intercity rail corridor in the U.S.
The entire corridor carries nearly 3 million riders annually with an impressive 80 percent farebox recovery ratio. To call the service 'lightly utilized' and worthy of abandonment is the type of shortsighted thinking that saw the demise of American streetcars and interurbans. In a state where crews worked overnight to repair an interstate in Los Angeles in just a few days, surely we could make the same investments in our rail corridors.
