Andy Street and Andy Burnham examine Bordeaux-to-Tours funding model as a way to replace axed high-speed line
could be based on the latest leg of the TGV high-speed railway in France, according to plans revealed on Thursday.The proposal has been drawn up in the wake of Rishi Sunak’s decision last October to axe the second phase of the high-speed rail line and re-routing the £36bn earmarked for the scheme to hundreds of transport projects around the country.
The group explored other options to boost connectivity between the two cities, including upgrading the existing West Coast Main Line and building bypasses around the pinch points on the existing line, but found only a new rail link would be able to manage the increased capacity expected on the line by the 2030s.
Mr Burnham said that while he was “disappointed” by the decision to cancel the Northern leg of HS2, he is focused on delivering an alternative.
