Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he confronted the Chinese premier about the spying allegations during the G-20 summit but said China will not be classified as an “enemy.”

LONDON — British politicians were asking for answers on Monday after it was revealed that two men — one working as a researcher in Parliament — were arrested in March on suspicion of spying for China.

The police did not release names, as is custom here, as neither suspect has been charged. Both were given bail until October. They are being investigated by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, which oversees espionage inquiries. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he confronted China’s Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in India on Sunday.in New Delhi that he’d expressed his “very strong concerns about any interference in our parliamentary democracy, which is obviously unacceptable.”

“I feel forced to respond to the media accusations that I am a 'Chinese spy,’” the statement said. “It is wrong that I should be obliged to make any form of public comment on the misreporting that has taken place.”
