The piece is, frankly, fan fiction that takes full advantage both of Austen’s popularity and her residing in the public domain. But it’s plot-driven fan fiction that bespeaks of very impressive craft and, last Friday night, the audience was cooing with the delight that comes from enjoying familiar characters in new stories. Theaters often say they need to compete more with streaming TV and, well, this is a clever way to exploit our current obsession with the episodic.
